NHL To Make Live Games Available Online Next Season

The NHL has reached a deal with New York-based NeuLion to “make live games available on the Web starting next season,”. NHL.com and individual team Web sites will sell an online version of the league’s “Center Ice” package of out-of-market games. A subscription for the entire season costs $169 (ed. note: a full-season subscription on satellite or cable cost the same last year); fans can sign up on a per-night basis for $15. Around 45 games will be streamed each week and will run uninterrupted without ads. The league started testing live games online at the end of the ’06-07 season. Some of the businesses using NeuLion’s technology “stream videos and live TV programs to TV sets using special set-top boxes,” but the NHL currently plans “to limit its online games to computers.”
