Weather.com is adding several new advertising options to its interactive weather maps, including one that allows retailers to highlight their store locations—corresponding with their real-world locations—as “points of interest” on the maps, just as major cities and landmarks are currently displayed. When users click on the virtual retail locations, they will receive more information on the advertiser’s company along with other store locations. AT&T has signed on as an initial sponsor. In addition, brands can now place geography-specific advertising alongside Weather.com’s weather maps. These ads can be targeted based on state, designated market area and zip code. They can also key on the location of local parks, schools and other attractions. The new ad offerings come as part of a relaunch of the interactive map product, which first went live in March. The 3-D maps allow users to pinpoint weather conditions for specific locations, such as their own home, and can pan and zoom in on these locations for varied views. Officials from Weather Channel Interactive say that since the launch, users are spending three times as much time on the maps than the previously static versions.
