The latest evolution of the electronic media guide has the Orlando Magic shifting production of its printed media book to a flash drive as part of the team’s “green” initiative while also saving printing costs. While all NBA teams and most other professional sports teams make their media guides available online through their individual team Web sites, the Magic this year will be the first NBA franchise to put their media guide on a flash drive, or memory stick, that can be plugged directly into a computer. The result will be a reduction of printed media guides to 9,000 from 12,000 copies. In the past, all full-season-ticket holders received a printed media guide, but this year the team will begin sending season-ticket customers a memory stick instead of the 352-page guide they received last season. It costs the Magic approximately $6 for each memory stick media guide, compared with $8 for the printed version. The team’s new 352-page interactive guide will be available on an environmentally friendly 128-megabyte memory stick that can plug into any computer. The new effort will save more than a half million sheets of 5-by-8-inch pieces of paper.
