VH1 has rolled out Scandalist.com, the latest in a proliferation of celebrity-gossip-themed blogs on the Web. Scandalist features breaking celebrity news, photos, quizzes and polls, with original video planned for down the road—mostly of the juicy gossip variety. Among the blog’s features at launch is Top 100 Celebrity Scandals, which in typical VH1 light mocking fashion lists the more embarrassing travails of celebs such as Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith. VH1 executives said that Scandalist was launched in response to the recent success enjoyed by VH1 Blog, which in the second quarter of 2008 saw its visits nearly double and its page views triple versus the same period last year, according to the network’s internal numbers. While that blog’s content is focused specifically on VH1 series and stars, Scandalist appears to play in the same arena as TMZ, PerezHilton.com, Yahoo’s OMG! And MSN’s soon to launch celebrity news venture. For example, a headline posted on Aug. 5 reads: “The Jonas Brothers are Virginal Douchebags.” Scandalist is also available to mobile users, and VH1 has created a specialized version for the iPhone.
