Ridiculous Item of the Day: 18% of North Carolina Residents Are Unaware of the Carolina Hurricanes

A July 14 survey of 500 likely North Carolina voters conducted by Raleigh-based Public Policy Polling indicated that football is the most-watched sport in the state, drawing 37% of votes compared to 25% for basketball and 17% for baseball. When voters were asked which event they would attend if given free tickets, the NFL Panthers outranked the Univ. of North Carolina (UNC) men's basketball team 29% to 28%. But UNC led Duke Univ. 57% to 32% in a head-to-head popularity matchup between the two schools. Notably, 18% of those surveyed were unaware North Carolina was the home of the NHL's Hurricanes (Public Policy Polling).
