ESPN Claims More Users View NFL Content on Mobile Phones Than on Computers

The biggest upset of this football season may have been Appalachian State University's victory over Michigan. But for the mobile-marketing industry, it came the day ESPN had more visits to the NFL content on its mobile-phone website than it did to the same area on its PC website. Game changer? Usage is up more than 200% year over year, according to ESPN. ESPN declined to confirm the numbers, but an executive briefed on the data said that for one 24-hour period, ESPN's wireless NFL section, with 4.9 million visits, topped the PC NFL section's 4.5 million visits. Mobile-measurement firm M:Metrics Senior Analyst Mark Donovan said, “Increasingly, we see people using the mobile phone because it’s convenient.” Donovan said that sports content “has the potential to be a mobile-web bellwether, if not one of the killer applications, along with search and weather”
