Seattle Mariners Launch Nintendo DS In-Game Stadium Service

Nintendo announced Tuesday that Mariners fans can use their DS game players to access the stadium’s wireless Nintendo Fan Network free of charge. The network allows DS owners to track player stats, watch stadium video and access other Major League Baseball information. The Nintendo Fan Network, exclusive to Safeco, allows DS owners to experience interactive content that can enhance their ballpark experience, said Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale. To access the Nintendo Fan Network, DS owners will need to spend about a minute downloading the network software at one of more than a dozen stations placed around Safeco. DS users will need to download the software every time they visit Safeco to get the latest updates and upgrades. Nintendo, which owns the Mariners, tested the service during the 2007 season, offering just two download stations and charging $5 per game for access. The free service should see a new pitch-tracking feature introduced this weekend, Young said. Mariners fans who bring their DS systems to Safeco can access the following features:
• Player stats for both the Mariners and the opposing team.
• Updates on other Major League Baseball games around the country.
• A stadium-wide chat network that allows fans to send and receive text messages.
• Trivia and other quickie “minigames” fans can play against each other.
• Live in-house video coverage of the game.
• Live radio coverage from KOMO.
• Pitch Effect, which should be introduced this weekend and will allow viewers to see the trajectory of each pitch and get information on the speed and placement of each ball thrown.
• Food and beverage service – the ability to order snacks delivered to your seat.
