Reliance Purchases Cricket Video Webcasting Site Willow.tv to Spur South Asian Passions

In its latest foray into the U.S. entertainment industry, Reliance ADA Group of India has bought a U.S. Web site that lets cricket fans around the world watch their favorite teams play. Rajesh Sawhney, president of Reliance Entertainment, a unit of Reliance ADA, said Reliance will spend $60 million to $70 million to purchase 75% of California-based Willow TV and expand its operations. He declined to say how much of the amount was for the acquisition and how much was for expansion. Willow TV, which is named after the tree from which cricket bats have traditionally been made, has more than one million registered users. It is the world's largest live streaming video site for cricket that, for a fee, gives subscribers the ability to watch almost any major cricket game live. It also has offices in India's technology capital of Bangalore. Willow TV is part of Reliance's plans to bring South Asians in the U.S. and elsewhere cricket, movies and long-distance phone service through their computers and phones.
