Toronto Maple Leafs Ban Video Cameras In Locker Room Over Web Rights

The Maple Leafs "have banned hand-held video cameras from their dressing room," and Toronto newspapers and the Canadian Press "have united to fight what they see as an impediment to their right to gather news," according to Chris Zelkovich of the TORONTO STAR. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Senior VP/Communications & Community Development John Lashway originally indicated that the ban "was a privacy issue, adding that the team didn't want to see nude shots of players ending up on the Internet." But Zelkovich writes, "It's about turf. The Leafs have a website and they want their property to be exclusively theirs." Lashway said, "We need to find a way to protect our own interests as far as Web content and at the same time balance that out and not restrict the media's right to cover the games. We should have a natural advantage in terms of developing our website. It wouldn't be wise to give away those advantages." But Lashway indicated that "this isn't so much a permanent ban as a timeout until the team can draft a policy"
