Juan Galan knows something about coming up short, even if it is by the smallest of margins. The former major-league baseball prospect and four-year college baseball letterman came within one-tenth of a second of making the bigs after four teams invited him to try out. So, when his own children started to play sports, Galan created StudAthlete, a Web site that tracks athletic metrics. While other sites and companies record statistics such as home runs and goals, StudAthlete tracks a player's athletic abilities. By recording an athlete's 40-yard-dash time, for instance, college recruiters can judge future players on a level field. With his children looking at college, Galan wanted to design a simple, easy way to impress college coaches without traveling to every soccer tournament in the nation. StudAthlete offers services for baseball, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball players. These sports, unlike football and basketball, are easier to gauge and track a players athletic ability, he said.
