ESPN to Relaunch ESPN360 With More Live Events

ESPN360.com will adopt a new programming strategy this fall, becoming a live sports-driven programming service. Under the new strategy, the ESPN Digital Media and ESPN Programming units will collaborate to present more than 2,000 live events on ESPN360.com in the next 12 months, up from over 200 in ’06 and more than 500 through July of this year. A new user interface for ESPN360.com is scheduled to launch this fall. ESPN360.com will feature different live sports events and programming every day, delivering multiple live events at a time for sports and leagues including, but not limited to, NBA, NASCAR, college sports, tennis, soccer and press conferences. With ESPN360.com’s shift to live programming, ESPN.com will become the home for ESPN’s library of daily on-demand video. ESPN360.com launched in '01, but has been hampered by a lack of subscribers. The site is currently available in more than 15 million homes nationwide that receive a high-speed Internet connection from an affiliated service provider. ESPN has been selling ESPN360 to cable operators and telephone companies under the same carriage agreements that it sells its linear channels. So far, only AT&T and Verizon have signed up for the service. ESPN execs clearly hope the push for more live events will put pressure on cable operators, such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable, to cut a deal.
